Apologies: Phil Bates (WMP)
Members present: Gerry Keane (Anchor), Brian Tohill (The Fountain), John
Tighe (The Spotted Dog), Cee Jay (UnPlug), Adam Crossley (Digbeth Residents'
Association), Val Woodward (Digbeth Residents' Association), Bill Dagnan

Katherine Foy (St Patrick's Festival), Angela Rattigan (The White Swan).

Minutes of previous meeting: Read and approved.

Matters arising: None

St Patrick's Day Parade:
BD:     13 arrests. Generally ok. Few arrests for offences other than
drink-related.
Pleased with general behaviour.
Drinking on street stopped at 7pm.
Old Crown presented a potential problem where evening R&B music crowd and St
Patrick's crowd didn't really mix. The evening event was probably
"inappropriate".

JM:     Stewards should prevent people from crossing the dual carriageway
during the parade.

BT:     Traffic, including taxis, were allowed through to closed streets
after 6.00am. This should not happen.

GK:     Sandor and Kang warehouse in Birchall Street was isolated by road
closures – some of which seemed unnecessary – resulting in customers driving
onto the pavements past stewards to gain access to the warehouse.

JT:     Parade meetings should start earlier next year – preferably before
December.

JT:     Staff vehicle passes should be issued earlier.

Data Exchange:
JT:     To coordinate gathering of data re. utility bills, tradesmen, waste
services etc..

Digbeth Pub Guide:
Lukewarm response to proposal that a Digbeth Pub Guide would be beneficial.

ASBOs:
AC:     Charles Napier pub was warned by police not to serve people banned
from the area due to ASBOs. How does a licensee know whether a customer has
an ASBO?

GK:     Questioned ASBO policy and how it is implemented.

AC:     Having requested police "walk-throughs" thinks it is working. Two
"walk-throughs" last weekend resulted in two people being found in
possession of drugs.

A.O.B:
VW:     Project Pigeon in Fazeley Street are to organise a sponsored pigeon
race in June. Members present who agreed to pay £5.00 to have a racing
pigeon named after them included:
Charles Napier, The Spotted Dog, Anchor, An Craic, White Swan, Fountain,
(subsequently The Actress and Bishop, The Old Crown and Demi- Sel also
agreed to donate).

VW:     The next Digbeth Residents' Meeting is at Zellig, Custard Factory on
Monday 13th June at 7.00pm.

GK:     The Anchor is hosting a sponsored "Headshave" for S.E.N.S.E.on
Saturday 2nd July

Ultraviolence – volunteers urgently needed!

May 8, 2011

Companis has been commissioned by VIVID to make a new work for their forthcoming exhibition Ecstatic, to be launched on 13 May. The work “Ultraviolence Part I” will be a sensory assault where the visitors will be invited to consume a superficial edible landscape in VIVID’s space whilst swathed in intensely coloured light and fluorescence.

The preparation for the event will take place on the day of Friday 13th between 11 and 6, and the event itself is scheduled 6-8pm. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the delivery of both aspects (preparation and event) so if you are interested to assist please email me letting me know your availability.

As a volunteer you will be expected to assume a semi-performative role and engage directly with the audience – so an interest in performance would be good however there are also less obtrusive roles available. For more information contact companis.kaye@googlemail.com and to register your interest email sonyarussell@blueyonder.co.uk by Wednesday 11 May.

For information, VIVID is based on Heath Mill Lane in Digbeth in Birmingham.

Thanks in advance.

We look forward to hearing from you

THE SKIES WERE GREY!

Fools in Birmingham

March 28, 2011

Marauding across the UK and Europe, this troupe of multi-talented players entertain with a huge variety of delights, from improvised comedy through to physical theatre performances of Shakespeare. Always exciting and never the same.  From 18th to 27th March 2011, we'll be at The Edge (Friction Arts, The Edge, 79-81 Cheapside, Deritend B12 0QH) in Birmingham performing and running workshops.  Here are the details…

Shakespeare's Richard II
Performances begin at 7.30pm (doors 7pm) on Tuesday 22, Thursday 24 and Saturday 26 March and 2pm (matinee performances, doors 1.30pm) on Wednesday 23 March and Friday 25 March

We have developed this production of Shakespeare's Richard II over two and a half years, touring our work in progress throughout the UK and Europe, presenting to audiences through feedback-led ‘Scratch nights’. We are now touring it as a full production, returning to the same 10 places on our tour every year in order to develop our relationship with the communities and audiences in those places.

This work is created using a delicate and intimate theatrical structure called Fooling, devised by the Director Jonathan Kay. The structure opens up the performers' inner world, turning us inside out, so our imaginations create the costume, props and set; our private world the paint palette for our emotions and the audience's imagination. Then, working in complicity, we create the characters out of shapes, with several performers playing parts at the same time. Thus revealing the characters’ hidden depths and changing moods. The result is magical, detailed and rich. A visual feast, even for those who do not readily appreciate Shakespeare!
(Suggested donation £10)

Reviews for Richard II
“FASCINATING! I actually liked it much more than I thought I would and even found it disturbing in parts – which is odd as you were just a bunch of fools in broad daylight! WAS F***ING AMAZING!”
    – Julie Burchill

“Mesmerising, like windows into layers of the soul”
    – Mike Sells

“I’ve never seen a performance quite like it – I spent much of the next day thinking about the play, and how the performance style had meant it was something I experienced rather than observed, how it involved me in a way that wasn’t always comfortable (no bad thing)”
    – Nicky Getgood

Music Be the Fool of Love!
Weekend Workshop in Fooling with a Musical Tilt
Saturday 19 and Sunday 20
10am to 5pm both days (over 18s)
Another aspect of our work involves facilitating public weekend workshops in Fooling.  The Fools now teach this authentic theatrical structure, created by Jonathan Kay over 37 years of performance experience.  It is a way for our audience to learn the structure of fooling, begin to forge a clearer relationship with their imaginative selves and become more present in performance.  We bring to these workshops our own 'Tilts' – meaning we bring influences from our lives, in this case music, and weave these in with our experience as Fools working within the structure of fooling. (Suggested donation £60)

Please email Joanne.tremarco@nomadicacademyoffools.com to book a place on the workshop.

Music Be the Fool of Love! Performance and Jam
Saturday 19 March at 7.30pm
We also perform evenings of pure improvised fooling where the audience is King and plays are created in tandem with them using various characters each performer has developed called our 'repertory company'.  On Saturday 19 March, we will be improvising using the structure of fooling with music.  Our audience can also leap in with their own musical wonders and together we sing songs, play the guitar, violin or piano or recite poetry and generally get to know each other better! (By donation)

Celebration of Spring with Ceremonial Life Drawing
7.30pm on Sunday 20 March
An evening combining performance, ritual and fine art.  During the evening, the audience will be able to draw the 'scenes' they see before them as the performers pose for between 2 and 20 minutes.  This performance is a celebration of the Spring Equinox. (Suggested donation £8/£5)

Fooling workshop with a Physical Theatre Tilt
Saturday 26 and Sunday 27
10am to 5pm both days
Another opportunity to learn how to use the unique structure of Fooling, this time in the context of a physical theatre tilt.  Suitable for everyone over 18, though this work is emotionally rigorous and will explore physicality, so wear comfortable clothing.  (Suggested donation £60)

Please email Joanne.tremarco@nomadicacademyoffools.com to book a place on this workshop.

We ask our audiences to pay by donation – giving them back the power to decide how they wish to value the work and allowing the work to be accessible for those who could not normally afford to see it.  We often suggest a minimum amount – particularly for the workshops – to give an indication of the level of work that goes into these performances and workshops.

Please phone Katie on 07810 540 379 or email Joanne on Joanne.tremarco@nomadicacademyoffools.com for further information or visit our website: www.theatreofnow.com.
